Water damage in La Place: why it happens here
La Place sits between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain in a parish where more than 87% of the land is a FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area (St. John the Baptist Parish), under about 63 inches of rain a year, with June, July and August each bringing nearly 7 inches (NOAA climate normals, New Orleans). Summer mornings average about 90% relative humidity (NCEI).
The storms are the story everyone here knows. In August 2012, Hurricane Isaac pushed a near 7-foot surge across Lake Pontchartrain and into Lake Maurepas; water flowed into LaPlace to depths of 1 to 3 feet, almost 4,000 people were rescued and I-10 closed (National Hurricane Center), and the state puts the toll at more than 7,000 homes (Louisiana CPRA). In August 2021, Hurricane Ida came ashore as a Category 4 with 150 mph winds (NWS); in LaPlace, residents were trapped in homes and attics by 4 to 6 feet of surge, about 800 were rescued, most structures in the parish had roof damage, and the parish reports that more than three in four occupied homes suffered significant damage (NWS; St. John the Baptist Parish, 2021 annual report). The West Shore Lake Pontchartrain levee, 18.5 miles and $3.4 billion, is under construction to give LaPlace, Reserve and Garyville 100-year surge protection, with completion expected in 2030 (Louisiana CPRA).
Between hurricanes, the causes are the ordinary ones made worse by the climate: a roof that lost shingles in the last storm and leaks into the attic, an air conditioner condensate line that clogs in a season when the AC never stops, a water heater or a supply line that fails, and a slab or raised floor that never fully dried after the last flood.
Mold in La Place homes, and what Louisiana requires
The Louisiana Department of Health's own guidance is that mold generally won't grow if wet areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours, that testing is not recommended by federal or state agencies, and that indoor humidity should be kept between 30% and 50% (LDH). After Ida, LDH said plainly that almost every property damaged by the storm and exposed to rain would have mold growth. LSU AgCenter's housing specialists add that new mold colonies can form in as little as three days and that wet insulation inside walls has to come out (LSU AgCenter).
Louisiana licenses mold remediation: any remediation project worth $7,500 or more needs a contractor holding a Mold Remediation license from the State Licensing Board for Contractors, and since 2022 a licensee may not do both the assessment and the remediation on the same property. Assessment itself isn't licensed. Our mold remediation and mold inspection pages explain the rules and how to check a license.

Questions
La Place water damage and mold questions
How fast can someone get to me in La Place?
Call and we connect you straight away with a local professional who serves the River Parishes; they will tell you their arrival time before you commit. Emergency water extraction is normally same day. After a hurricane, demand is extreme and the earlier you call, the better your place in the queue.
What does it cost?
It depends on how much water, what it touched and how long it sat. Published national figures put water damage restoration at roughly $1,200 to $5,000 and mold remediation at about $1,500 to $9,000. The inspection and estimate come first, so you know the figure before any work starts.
Will my homeowners insurance pay?
Louisiana homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental water from inside the home, but the state insurance department is clear that flood, surface water and water backing up through sewers or drains are not covered, so flood cover is a separate NFIP policy and it takes 30 days to start. St. John the Baptist Parish's Community Rating System class earns a 15% discount. Photograph everything before cleanup and call your insurer early.
Do you handle hurricane and storm damage too?
Yes. Storm and flood cleanup is part of water damage restoration, and a roof opened by wind that has let rain in is the most common call here after a storm. For fire and smoke damage, send the estimate form or call and we will point you to the right local help.
Is Damp Solving the contractor?
We are the people you call first. We connect you with trusted local water damage and mold professionals and stay out of the way, which is often the quickest route to help in an emergency. The professional inspects, quotes and does the work; you deal with them directly.
