The Georgia Aquarium is a popular tourist attraction in Atlanta, GA. More than 11 million US gallons of water are on display in the aquarium’s seven main galleries, home to hundreds of species and thousands of animals. From its 2005 opening until 2012, when it was surpassed by the S.E.A. Aquarium in Singapore and the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China, it held the title of largest aquarium in the world; the Georgia Aquarium is now the largest in the United States and the third largest in the world.
The majority of the money needed to construct and outfit the new facility came from a $250 million bequest made by a foundation of local businesspeople including The Home Depot co-founder Bernard Marcus. Educator and businessman Bernard Marcus first shared his plans to build Atlanta an aquarium in November 2001. After he and his wife, Billi Marcus, visited 56 aquariums in 13 countries, he donated $250 million to help build Georgia Aquarium. Another $40 million in corporate donations made it possible for the Aquarium to operate without incurring any debt.
Located immediately north of Centennial Olympic Park, the aquarium in downtown Atlanta sits on land donated by The Coca-Cola Corporation. There’s a whale shark tank that holds 6.3 million US gallons of water, and it’s the main attraction. There are many interesting animals on display at the aquarium, such as beluga whales, whale sharks, bottlenose dolphins, California sea lions, sea otters, manta rays, and tiger sharks. The aquarium is the first facility outside of Asia to accommodate the massive whale shark, and was built around an exhibit that holds thousands of the creatures.
A blue metal and glass shell protects its interior. When it first opened in November 2005, the aquarium held 8 million US gallons of fresh and saltwater in its exhibits, making it the largest in the world. The aquarium’s covered space was 550,000 square feet. The quantity of water stored has expanded to 11 million US gallons as a result of further additions to the collection and the remodelling of several habitats. A stainless steel commissary at -20 °F stores 20,000 pounds of frozen food for the animals on display.
In the film Ben 10: Alien Swarm, the aquarium played a key role: the Plumbers’ headquarters was the main lobby. Animal Planet’s new show The Aquarium, which followed the care and conservation efforts of the Georgia Aquarium, aired in 2019. Following the conclusion of the show’s two seasons and twenty episodes, Discovery+ began streaming the series, and the Georgia Aquarium entered into a partnership with the channel to create additional material about animal experiences and conservation.
